Blending is a listening skill first.

What phonics should a kindergartner practise first?

Short Vowels is the year's main work and the largest cluster: 1,260 worksheets split evenly between short a, e, i, o and u at 252 sheets each. Every vowel set carries the same seven formats, from a Lesson page through Roll and Read, Word Ladder, Crack the Code, Read and Draw, Sentence Scramble and Word Search. The order to teach these clusters

Alphabet & Letter Recognition (373 sheets) — Names, shapes and formation of every letter. Nothing else works until a child can find and write a letter on sight.
Sight Words & Phonemic Awareness (164 sheets) — Hearing beginning, middle and ending sounds, plus 118 sheets of high-frequency words. Needs letters, and it is what makes blending possible.
