Teaching Sight Words
What it is
Sight words are common words a child should recognize instantly. Some follow phonics rules (and, can), and some have irregular parts to memorize (said, of, was).
When a child is ready
Start a small set once the child knows most letter sounds; add words as they appear in the child's reading.
If they struggle
Sound out the parts that are regular and mark the part that must be remembered. A few words practiced daily beat a long list practiced weekly.
