Teaching Spelling and Encoding
What it is
Encoding is spelling: hearing a word and choosing letters for it, the reverse of reading. The grown-up reads from the answer key and the child says each sound or word back before writing it, one sound to a box: four sounds, then five short words and the week's heart word, then a short sentence.
When a child is ready
Start once the child can say the sounds of a short word in order and write most letters from memory.
If they struggle
If the letters come out in the wrong order, say the word slowly while the child pushes one counter forward per sound, then write a letter for each counter. Keep the pace unhurried; a word said back correctly before it is written is half spelled already.
