Foundations to Fluency is the phonics practice ladder of the Faith Readers family. Six levels move through the phonics sequence — letters and sounds, short-vowel families, beginning blends, digraphs and ending blends, long vowels and r-controlled vowels, advanced patterns — and each short workbook teaches one pattern with a decodable story, word building, copywork, a mastery check, and a certificate. The levels follow the pattern, not the grade: a fourth grader who never got vowel teams starts at Level 5; a first grader who reads blends confidently skips ahead. Is Foundations to Fluency the right fit?
This is targeted phonics practice, not a full-year reading program. It exists for the child who is stuck on something specific — at whatever age that happens.
Choose it when
- Your child reads but keeps guessing at blends, mixing up vowel teams, or stalling on one kind of word — and you can name the pattern, or HARVEST can.
- An older student needs to close a phonics gap without being handed a grade-level book that looks too young. Levels are labeled by pattern, never by grade.
- You want a short, self-contained workbook with a mastery check at the end, so you know when it is time to move on.

Questions parents ask
- My child is nine and still guessing at words. Is this for us?
- Yes — that is what it was built for. Because the levels are named by pattern rather than by grade, an older child can work on short vowels or blends without being handed a book labelled for a much younger year, which is usually the thing that makes catch-up work fail.
- How is this different from the main reading curriculum?
- Phonics, Decoding and Early Fluency is the full K–5 sequence, taught in order. Foundations to Fluency is targeted practice on one pattern at a time, for a child who has a specific gap rather than a missing year. Many families use it alongside the main sequence.
- Which level do we start on?
- Take the free HARVEST placement, which names the patterns your child has and has not secured, then start at the level covering the first gap. If in doubt, start one level lower than you think: a fortnight of easy success costs very little and rebuilds confidence.
- Is this a dyslexia programme?
- It is a structured phonics programme, not a diagnosis or a therapy, and we do not claim it treats a specific condition. It teaches one pattern at a time, explicitly and cumulatively, which is the approach a child who finds reading hard usually needs. A child with a suspected learning difficulty should also be assessed by a qualified professional.
