How the phonics practice is arranged

Each set is one pattern, such as short a or the ck ending, practiced more than one way. A lesson page states the rule. Sorts and word hunts have the child tell the pattern from its neighbors, word chains change one sound at a time, and fluency pages put the pattern into sentences.

Choose by skill rather than by age. Phonics patterns build on each other, so an older child who cannot yet read silent e words belongs in the long vowel sets of an earlier grade, and working there is not a step backwards.
