Not at once, and not in the order listed. Take them as they turn up in a child's reading. The -le ending and the OO sound appear constantly and are worth teaching deliberately; ey and ie can wait until a word forces the question. The two small vowel Practice sets, at 8 and 5 sheets, are check-backs rather than teaching.

Why does the Long a Family set have only one worksheet?

Because that is what exists in the library for it: a single Lesson page, and it is open to everyone. Most long a work sits in 1st grade's Magic E sets and in 3rd grade's Long A with eigh and ei. Showing the real count is more useful than padding the set out to match the others.

Is 2nd grade right for a child reading a year behind?

Only for the patterns they have actually reached. The clusters here assume Magic E, blends and digraphs are settled from 1st grade. If they are not, work in the 1st grade hub first. Second grade is largely exceptions to rules a child has to know before the exceptions mean anything.

What phonics patterns belong in 2nd grade?

Long Vowels picks up directly from 1st grade's Magic E work: Long U with ue and ew and a Long Vowel Teams Review at 252 worksheets each, Long I with igh, the Long O Family and Sliding Vowels at 216 each, and a single-sheet Long a Family lesson. R-Controlled Vowels adds 648 worksheets in three even sets: Bossy R, Bossy R with ir and ur, and a Bossy R Review. The review sets matter here, because this is the first grade holding enough vowel patterns to be confused with one another.

Special Sounds & Endings is the widest cluster anywhere in the phonics library, at 1,525 worksheets in nine sets: The AW & AU Sounds at 252, then the -are family, the -ear family, the EY sound, the IE sound and the -le ending at 216 each, the OO sound at 180, and two small Practice sets on vowel sounds (8 sheets) and vowel teams and diphthongs (5 sheets). These spellings go better one at a time than as a survey.

Spelling & Word Work holds 65 worksheets: 25 spelling practice, 20 spelling lists, 10 word building and unscramble, and 10 missing and hidden letters.
