Teaching Missing & Hidden Letters
What it is
A sound can often be spelled more than one way, and missing-letters work asks the child to choose. A sentence gives the clue, the word is shown with one gap, and a short bank offers the spellings that could fill it. Only one of them makes a real word.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child knows two spellings for the same sound and reads the clue sentences without help.
If they struggle
Have the child read the sentence aloud and say the missing word before looking at the gap. Then try each spelling from the bank in turn and ask whether the result looks like a word they have seen. If the wrong one keeps being chosen, sort a few words by that spelling first and come back.
