Teaching Word Building & Unscramble
What it is
Word building is spelling a word from its sounds. The child names a picture, writes one spelling in each sound box (a letter team such as sh or ai takes one box), then writes the whole word and reads it back. A bank of tiles holds every spelling the words need.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child can say the sounds of a word in order and knows the letter teams taught so far.
If they struggle
If a box is left over or one is missing, the sounds were not counted correctly. Have the child tap one finger per sound before writing, and remember that a team shares a box. Reading the finished word back is the check: it must sound like the picture.
