Teaching Spelling Practice

What it is

These are working formats rather than a new pattern: choosing the correct spelling out of several close copies, coloring by spelling, and reading words from a list. They exist to make the child look at the letters instead of at the overall shape of the word.

When a child is ready

Use them once there is a real list of words being learned that week, since these pages practice words rather than teach them.

If they struggle

When the wrong spelling is chosen, do not simply mark it. Have the child read both versions aloud letter by letter and say what is different between them, then write the correct one from memory three times, covering it between tries rather than copying with it in view.
