Teaching Spelling Practice
What it is
Dictation is spelling by ear. The grown-up reads the words and a sentence from the answer key; the child says each one back, writes it, and at the end checks the work and fixes one. The words carry the week's spelling pattern. Nothing to be spelled is printed on the child's page.
When a child is ready
Use it once the week's pattern has been taught and read; dictation checks whether it can be spelled, it does not teach it.
If they struggle
When a word is misspelled, do not correct it at once. Have the child read back exactly what was written, sound by sound, and find the place where it stops matching the word. Say the word again slowly, then have the whole word rewritten, not patched.
