Teaching Spelling Practice
What it is
Dictation is spelling by ear. The grown-up reads the words and a sentence from the answer key; the child says each one back, writes it, and at the end checks the work and fixes one. The words carry the week's word part, a root or a prefix or a suffix. Nothing to be spelled is printed on the child's page.
When a child is ready
Use it once the week's word part has been taught and its words read; dictation checks whether they can be spelled, it does not teach them.
If they struggle
When a long word is misspelled, have the child name its parts first (prefix, root, suffix) and spell one part at a time. A part that is already known should be written without hesitation; the trouble is usually at a join. The whole word is rewritten, not patched.
