Teaching Spelling Practice
What it is
Dictation is spelling by ear. The grown-up reads the words and a sentence from the answer key; the child says each one back, writes it, and at the end checks the work and fixes one. The words carry the week's spelling pattern or word part. Nothing to be spelled is printed on the child's page.
When a child is ready
Use it once the week's pattern has been taught and read; dictation checks whether it can be spelled, it does not teach it.
If they struggle
When a long word is misspelled, have the child say it one syllable at a time and write each syllable before joining them. Then compare with the key and find the exact letters that differ. The whole word is rewritten, not patched.
