Teaching Missing & Hidden Letters
What it is
The work is choosing between spellings of one sound, such as c or s for the sound in nice and house. A sentence gives the clue, the word is shown with one gap, and a small bank lists the choices, each beside a familiar word that uses it. Only one choice makes a real word.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child reads multi-syllable words and knows that one sound can have several spellings.
If they struggle
Have the child read the clue sentence and say the missing word aloud before looking at the gap. Then write the word both ways on scrap paper; the wrong spelling usually looks wrong once it is written out. Keep a short list of the words that were missed and revisit them a week later.
