Teaching Missing & Hidden Letters
What it is
The gaps in Grade 5 are endings and letters that the ear cannot choose between: -able or -ible in comfortable and sensible, -tion or -sion in celebration and collision, -cious or -tious in precious and cautious, and silent letters in doubt and knob. A sentence gives the clue and a small bank lists the choices.
When a child is ready
Ready once each of these endings has been taught on its own and the child reads the words without help.
If they struggle
Meaning and word family decide what sound cannot. If the base is a whole word, -able is the likelier ending (comfort, comfortable); if it is not, try -ible (sens-, sensible). Have the child write the word both ways and keep a personal list of the ones that had to be checked.
