Teaching Missing & Hidden Letters
What it is
The missing piece of a word is found by sound. A picture is named, and the child circles the letters it starts with, the letters for its vowel sound, or the letters it ends with: sh or ch, ai or oa, ck or ng. The hidden letter is silent e, the one letter that turns cap into cape and kit into kite.
When a child is ready
A child is ready once the sounds of a word can be said in order and the Grade 1 letter teams are being taught.
If they struggle
Have the child say the picture's name slowly and stretch the part being asked about: the beginning, the middle, or the end. If two choices look alike, say each as a sound before choosing. For silent e, read the word with the e covered, then uncovered, and listen to the vowel change.
