Teaching Syllables

What it is

A syllable is a word part with one vowel sound. Splitting a long word into syllables lets a child read it in pieces: nap-kin, rab-bit, sun-set.

When a child is ready

Teach syllables when the child reads one-syllable words with blends and digraphs and starts meeting longer words.

If they struggle

Clap the word first to count the parts. Then find the vowels and split between the consonants that sit between them. Reading each piece and then the whole word is the habit to build.
