What the 1st Grade sheets practice, set by set

Alphabetical Order & Picture Dictionary: Each page puts six short words such as win, deck and sip into ABC order, then asks whether a word falls between two guide words, as on a dictionary page.
Letter Recognition (b d p, m n h): This is a short review in the first two weeks: six letter-sound pages, for b, d, p, m, n and h.
Blends & Digraphs: This is a large set: final blends such as st, ng and nk and the s, l and r blends, taught on lesson pages and practiced in sorts, word chains, word hunts and short fluency reads.
Bossy R (r-controlled vowels): The teams are met one at a time, ar first, then or, ir and ur, with sorts, code breakers, word hunts, word chains and flashcards for each.
Phonemic Awareness: The picture pages move on to middle sounds, words of three to five sounds, and changing one sound to make a new word.
Sight Words: The list grows to words such as she, this, said, so and be, on word cards and on heart-word pages that mark the tricky part of each word.
oo as in moon and book: Oo is new, late in the year: the child sorts spoon words from foot words and reads them on flashcards, code breakers and word hunts.
Rhyming & Word Families: The families are short-vowel words such as web, net, top and cup: the child sorts them by vowel, builds them, and reads them in word chains and roll-and-read games.
Syllables: The child counts the parts of picture words such as pencil and umbrella, sorts words into one part and two, and reads two-part words such as birthday and dishes.
