Teaching Blends & Digraphs
What it is
A blend is two consonants whose sounds are both heard (bl, st, tr); a digraph is two consonants that make one new sound (sh, ch, th, wh). Both appear at the start or end of words. In Grade 1 this is a large set: final blends such as st, ng and nk and the s, l and r blends, taught on lesson pages and practiced in sorts, word chains, word hunts and short fluency reads.
When a child is ready
Teach digraphs and blends after CVC words with all five short vowels are secure.
If they struggle
If the child drops a sound in a blend (reads stop as top), tap one finger per sound, then blend. If a digraph is read as two sounds, teach it as one letter-team with one keyword: sh, ship.
