Teaching Blends & Digraphs
What it is
A blend is two consonants whose sounds are both heard (bl, st, tr); a digraph is two consonants that make one new sound (sh, ch, th, wh). Both appear at the start or end of words.
When a child is ready
Teach digraphs and blends after CVC words with all five short vowels are secure.
If they struggle
If the child drops a sound in a blend (reads stop as top), tap one finger per sound, then blend. If a digraph is read as two sounds, teach it as one letter-team with one keyword: sh, ship.
