Teaching Sounds That Blend

What it is

Consonant blends are two or three consonants side by side whose sounds are each heard: fl in flag, st in stop, str in string.

When a child is ready

A child is ready once three-sound words are read smoothly and the child can hear four separate sounds in a spoken word.

If they struggle

Missing a sound in the blend is the usual error. Build the word with letter tiles, pull the blend apart and push it back together, and read blend words in families (st: stop, step, stem).
