Teaching The CK Ending
What it is
ck is two letters for the single sound /k/ at the end of a short-vowel word: rock, pick, duck, neck. It never begins a word — ck only closes one.
When a child is ready
Introduce it once the child blends three-sound short-vowel words and knows that both c and k can say /k/.
If they struggle
If the child reads two sounds (roc-k), cover the ck with a finger, read the beginning, then uncover it and add one /k/. A list grouped by vowel — back, neck, lick, lock, duck — shows the pattern faster than mixed words do.
