Teaching Digraphs sh, ch, th, wh

What it is

A digraph is two letters that team up to make one new sound: sh in ship, ch in chin, th in thin and that, wh in when. Neither letter keeps its own sound, so the pair is read as a single unit.

When a child is ready

Teach digraphs once the child reads short-vowel words such as cat and sun and knows each consonant's own sound.

If they struggle

A child who says /s/ then /h/ for sh is still reading letter by letter. Cover the pair with one finger and name it as one sound before blending the rest: sh-i-p. Th has two sounds, a quiet one in thin and a buzzing one in that; say both and let the child feel the difference with a hand on the throat.
