Teaching CH as /k/

What it is

In a group of words that came into English from Greek, ch says /k/: school, chorus, echo, monarch, scheme, chaos, stomach. The same two letters still say /ch/ in most words and /sh/ in a few from French, such as machine and chef.

When a child is ready

Teach it once ch as /ch/ is automatic and the child is reading longer words from science and history.

If they struggle

Have the child try /ch/ first and switch to /k/ when the result is not a word they know. Most of the /k/ words cluster in music, science, and history, so naming that gives the child somewhere to expect them instead of testing every ch word twice: chorus, orchestra, chemistry, chronic, monarch.
