Teaching The -que and -gue Endings
What it is
The endings -que and -gue say a plain /k/ and /g/ with the ue silent: antique, unique, mosque, opaque and plague, league, tongue, vague. They came in from French, which is why the spelling runs longer than the sound.
When a child is ready
Teach these once the child reads multisyllable words and no longer expects every letter to be spoken.
If they struggle
Have the child cover the ue and read what is left, antiq and leag, then say the whole word. There are not many of these words, so read the rhyming ones as one group (unique, antique, technique, boutique); the group is shorter than any rule about it.
