Teaching Double Consonants
What it is
Double consonants appear at the end of many short-vowel words (bell, miss, puff, jazz) and in the middle of two-syllable words (rabbit, dinner), where they keep the first vowel short.
When a child is ready
Teach final doubles after short vowels; teach middle doubles when the child begins two-syllable words.
If they struggle
The child does not need to say the sound twice. Read the word normally, then talk about why the letter is doubled. For two-syllable words, split between the doubled letters (rab-bit) and read each part.
