Teaching The QU Sound
What it is
q is never written alone in English; it always travels with u, and the pair says /kw/: quick, quilt, queen, quack. The u belongs to that sound and is not the vowel of the word.
When a child is ready
Teach qu once consonant sounds are known and short-vowel words are read steadily, since most early qu words are short-vowel words.
If they struggle
Children read the u as a vowel and produce quh-ick. Put qu on one card as a single team with the keyword queen, then show where the word's real vowel sits: qu-i-ck, qu-a-ck, qu-i-lt.
