Teaching Two Letters, One Sound
What it is
Two letters, one sound is the digraph idea: sh, ch and th each make a sound that neither letter makes on its own — ship, chin, thin. th has two versions, the quiet one in thin and the buzzing one in then, and both are correct.
When a child is ready
Teach digraphs once all five short vowels are read accurately inside three-sound words.
If they struggle
If ship comes out as s-hip, draw a box around the two letters so they look like one, then blend sh · i · p. Sorting picture cards into sh, ch and th piles, with no reading at all, settles the sounds before the spellings have to carry them.
