Teaching The NG Sound
What it is
ng is a single sound made at the back of the mouth and written with two letters: sang, long, hung, ring, strong. It closes a word or syllable, never begins one, and it is the sound at the end of every -ing word.
When a child is ready
Teach it after short vowels, once the child reads four-sound words such as stop and hand.
If they struggle
Children commonly read sang as san-g. Read the vowel and ng together as one chunk — ang, ing, ong, ung — then add the beginning sound. Starting with the -ing words the child already says all day, like running and singing, makes it land quickly.
