Teaching Double Letters
What it is
When the same consonant is written twice in the middle of a word, only one sound is heard: sup-per, bub-ble, hit-ting, tag-ging. The second letter is not read at all; it is there to keep the vowel in front of it short.
When a child is ready
Teach it when the child begins reading two-syllable words and words with -ing or -ed added on.
If they struggle
If the child says the sound twice, cover one letter of the pair, read the word, then uncover it and read it exactly the same way. Splitting between the two — sob/bing, tag/ging, sup/per — gives two easy parts to read before saying the whole word.
