Teaching Magic E: u-e
What it is
The u_e pattern is magic e with u in the middle: cube, mule, flute, rule. The silent e makes u say its name (cube) or the /oo/ sound (flute).
When a child is ready
Teach it after short u is solid and the child already reads a_e and i_e words.
If they struggle
If the child is confused by the two sounds, try the name sound first (/yoo/ as in cube); if the word does not sound right, try /oo/ as in rule. Both are correct u_e readings, and a growing vocabulary settles which is which.
