Teaching Vowel Teams
What it is
A vowel team is two or three letters that spell one vowel sound, most often a long one: ai and ay for long a (train, play), ee and ea for long e (green, steam), oa and ow for long o (boat, snow), ie and igh for long i (tie, light), ue and ew for long u (blue, grew).
When a child is ready
Teach vowel teams after magic e, once the child reads long-vowel words like cake and home without sounding out the silent e.
If they struggle
If the child sounds out each vowel separately, underline the team and say it as one sound first. Position helps with the long a pair: ai sits inside a word and ay comes at the end, so train and tray can be told apart before they are read.
