Teaching Magic E
What it is
Magic e (also called silent e or the VCe pattern) is the silent e at the end of a word that makes the vowel before it say its name: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite, hop becomes hope.
When a child is ready
A child is ready once short-vowel words with three sounds are read without guessing and the five long vowel sounds can be named.
If they struggle
If the child still reads cape as cap, cover the e with a finger and read the short word, then uncover it and read the long one. Do a few pairs a day (mad/made, pin/pine, cub/cube) until the e triggers the long sound on its own.
