Teaching Long a Family

What it is

Long a can be spelled several ways: a_e (cake), ai (rain), ay (play), and less often eigh (eight) or ei (vein).

When a child is ready

Teach the family after magic e a_e is secure and the child knows the long a sound.

If they struggle

Sorting words by spelling helps: ay usually ends a word, ai sits in the middle. Read one spelling until it is automatic before adding the next.
