Teaching Long U: ue and ew
What it is
ue and ew are vowel teams for long u and the /oo/ sound: blue, glue, rescue, new, grew, chew.
When a child is ready
Teach them after u_e, so the child already knows u can say /yoo/ or /oo/.
If they struggle
Both spellings usually come at the end of a word. If the child stalls, cover the team, read the beginning, then add the team's sound. Keep a small word list for each spelling.
