Teaching Y as a Vowel
What it is
At the end of a short word y works as a vowel and says long i: by, cry, fly, sky, try, dry. There is no other vowel in these words, so y has to do the job.
When a child is ready
Teach it after the long i spellings ie and igh, once the child reads long-vowel words steadily.
If they struggle
A child who stops at the y or gives it the sound it has in yes is treating it as a consonant. Ask whether the word has another vowel; if not, y is the vowel and says its long i name. Sorting cry, fly and sky beside tie and light shows three spellings for one sound.
