Teaching The -all Family
What it is
In the -all family the a drops its short sound; all together says /awl/: ball, tall, small, fall, wall. The chunk keeps that sound inside longer words too — calling, football, recall.
When a child is ready
Teach it after short a is secure, so the child can hear that this a is behaving differently from the a in cat.
If they struggle
Children read ball with a short a because that is what they were taught to do. Say plainly that all is one chunk with a sound of its own, underline all before reading each word, and read the family down a column — all, ball, call, fall, hall, tall, wall — so only the first sound changes.
