Teaching The GH Sound
What it is
In most words gh is silent and the vowel in front of it does all the work: light, night, though, through, weight, eight, height. In a smaller group gh says /f/ instead: cough, rough, tough, enough, laugh.
When a child is ready
Teach it after igh is secure, once the child reads longer words without sounding out every letter.
If they struggle
Teach the silent group by family so whole chunks are read at once: -ight, -ought, -aught. Keep the /f/ words as their own short memorized list, because no rule predicts them and hunting for one spends the child's effort on five words.
