Teaching The -are Family
What it is
The -are family is the /air/ sound in care, share, dare, glare, and square. It is a vowel followed by r, so the a says neither its short nor its long sound; the same sound is also spelled air in chair and pair.
When a child is ready
Teach it after ar, or, er, ir, and ur are read as single teams.
If they struggle
If the child reads care as car, teach are as one chunk with one keyword and read the family straight down: care, dare, hare, share, spare, square. Then set one ar word against one are word (car and care, star and stare) so the child hears that the silent e changes the whole team, not just the vowel.
