Teaching The IE Sound

What it is

The team ie says long e in field, chief, brief, and piece, and long i in pie, tie, lie, and die. Both readings are common, so ie is a two-sound team from the first day.

When a child is ready

Teach it once ee, ea, and igh words are read without hesitating.

If they struggle

Position is the best clue: ie at the end of a short word usually says long i (pie, tie, die, lie), and ie inside a word usually says long e (field, thief, believe). Sort a stack of word cards into an end pile and a middle pile before reading any of them.
