Teaching The -ear Family
What it is
The -ear team spells the /eer/ sound in hear, near, year, clear, and spear. It is a vowel plus r read as one unit, so the e and the a are never sounded out separately.
When a child is ready
Teach it after the -are family, once a vowel followed by r is already treated as one team.
If they struggle
The trouble is that ear has three jobs: hear, wear, and earth. Read only the /eer/ words until they are quick, then meet the other two as separate short lists so the mismatch is named rather than guessed at. For tear, read the whole sentence: a tear ran down her face, or tear the paper in half.
