Teaching The AW & AU Sounds
What it is
The teams aw and au spell the same /aw/ sound: saw, jaw, lawn, draw and haul, fault, autumn, caught. They are two spellings of one sound, not two different sounds.
When a child is ready
Teach them after short vowels and the long vowel teams, since /aw/ is a new sound rather than one the child already owns.
If they struggle
Position handles most of the spelling: aw comes at the end of a word or before n and l (saw, draw, lawn, crawl), and au sits inside (haul, fault, autumn, launch). Read one spelling for a few days, then the other, then mix them and have the child say which spelling a word needs before writing it.
