Teaching The -ble Family
What it is
The -ble family is words ending in the chunk -ble: bubble, marble, tumble, humble, terrible, possible, comfortable. It is the -le ending with its consonant already attached, so -ble is the whole last syllable, said as a quick /bul/.
When a child is ready
Teach it when the child is reading two- and three-syllable words and already handles -le words like table and handle.
If they struggle
Clap the word first so the number of parts is known, then split it just before the ending: hum-ble, mar-ble, ter-ri-ble. A doubled letter in front of -ble means the vowel before it is short (bubble, pebble, nibble), while a single letter usually means it is long (table, noble, cable), which is worth showing when the vowel comes out the wrong way.
