Teaching Vowel Sounds
What it is
The vowels reviewed in Grade 3 are the ones that glide or change: ou and ow (round, clown), oi and oy (coin, joy), au and aw (haul, paw). Each pair spells one sound two ways.
When a child is ready
Use it once the long-vowel teams are secure and these pairs have each been taught.
If they struggle
Position is the best guide: oi and au sit inside a word (coin, haul), while oy and aw usually come at the end (joy, paw). Have the child sort a handful of words by where the sound falls before choosing a spelling. Ow is the one to watch, since it has two sounds: clown and snow.
