Teaching Soft G
What it is
Soft g is the /j/ sound g makes before e, i, or y: gem, giant, gym. Before other letters it is hard /g/: gate, go.
When a child is ready
Teach it right after soft c, since the rule is the same.
If they struggle
There are more exceptions for g than for c (get, give, girl). Teach the rule, then teach the common exceptions as sight words rather than letting them undermine the rule.
