Teaching Soft C

What it is

Soft c is the /s/ sound c makes before e, i, or y: cent, city, cycle. Before other letters it is hard /k/: cat, cup.

When a child is ready

Teach it after the child reads hard c words easily and knows the vowels.

If they struggle

Have the child look at the letter after the c before reading. A simple test, 'e, i, or y makes c say /s/,' handles almost every word. Sort words into hard and soft piles.
