Teaching The -dge Ending
What it is
The -dge ending spells the /j/ sound right after a short vowel: badge, edge, bridge, judge. After a long vowel or consonant, -ge is used instead (cage, large).
When a child is ready
Teach it after short vowels and the -ck ending, which follows the same short-vowel logic.
If they struggle
Have the child check the vowel first: short vowel, then -dge; anything else, -ge. Sorting words into two columns makes the rule visible.
