Teaching Vowel Sounds
What it is
This is mixed vowel review rather than one new pattern: long vowels, r-controlled vowels, and the gliding vowels oi, oy, ou, and ow turn up on the same page. The child has to decide what kind of vowel a word holds before reading it.
When a child is ready
Use it after each vowel type has been practiced on its own, when the page heading is no longer needed to know which sound to try.
If they struggle
Slowing down on a mixed page is what these sheets are for, not a sign of trouble. Have the child underline the vowel or vowel team and name what kind it is out loud (long a, bossy r, sliding vowel) before saying the word, then go back to single-pattern practice for whichever type is missed most.
