Teaching Vowel Sounds
What it is
One vowel sound can have several spellings, and this is where they are sorted out: long a as ai, ay or a_e (rain, play, cake), long e as ee, ea or e_e (green, eat, these), long i as igh, ie or i_e (night, pie, time), and the r-controlled sounds er, ir and ur (fern, girl, turtle).
When a child is ready
Use it after each spelling has been practiced on its own, when the child can already read the words and now has to choose how to spell them.
If they struggle
Slowing down on mixed work is expected, not a sign of trouble. Have the child underline the vowel team in each word and name its sound aloud before reading on. Position helps with long a: ai sits inside a word and ay comes at the end.
