Teaching The EY Sound
What it is
The team ey at the end of a word usually says long e: honey, monkey, valley, chimney, turkey. In a smaller group it says long a instead: they, obey, prey, grey, survey.
When a child is ready
Teach ey once ee and ea are secure, since it is one more way to spell long e.
If they struggle
Have the child try long e first, because most ey words take it, then long a if the result is not a real word. Keep the long a words as a short remembered list of about six, since nothing in the spelling shows which group a word belongs to.
