Teaching The PH Sound

What it is

ph is two letters that say /f/: phone, photo, graph, elephant, alphabet. It comes from words English borrowed from Greek, which is why so many ph words have to do with sound, light or writing.

When a child is ready

Teach it after sh, ch and th, once the child accepts that a pair of letters can own one sound.

If they struggle

Reading ph is easy; spelling it is not, because /f/ can be written f or ph. Keep a short running list — phone, photo, graph, elephant, alphabet — and add each new ph word to it, since no rule predicts which spelling a word takes.
