Teaching The TCH Sound
What it is
tch is three letters for the /ch/ sound, and it lands straight after a short vowel at the end of a word or syllable: catch, fetch, pitch, kitchen. After a long vowel or a consonant, plain ch is used instead — beach, lunch.
When a child is ready
Teach it once ch words are read easily and the short vowels are known by sound.
If they struggle
If the child writes cach for catch, have them check the vowel first: short vowel plus /ch/ at the end means tch. Sort word cards into two columns, catch/fetch/pitch against beach/lunch/rich, so the eye sees where the spelling changes. Much, such, rich and which break the rule and are worth learning by sight.
