Teaching Word Endings s, es, ed, ing, er, est

What it is

An ending is a small piece added to a word the child already reads: -s and -es (helps, boxes, wishes), -ed (passed, seemed), -ing (sending, showing), and -er and -est (deeper, deepest). Most base words keep their spelling; a short word that ends in one vowel and one consonant doubles the last letter first, as cut does in cutting.

When a child is ready

Begin once the child reads the base words on sight, since an ending is only clear when the word under it is already known.

If they struggle

Children often read the base and drop the ending, or say every -ed as a full extra beat. Cover the ending, read the base, then uncover and read the whole word. For -ed, listen for its sounds: /t/ in passed and fixed, /d/ in seemed and failed.
