Teaching The WH Sound
What it is
wh is two letters for one sound at the start of a word: whip, wheat, whale, wheel. Nearly all the question words carry it — what, when, where, why, which — so it repays teaching early.
When a child is ready
Teach it after sh, ch and th, since it belongs to the same two-letters-one-sound family.
If they struggle
Most children read wh exactly like w, which does no harm in reading; the trouble is spelling. Keep the question words on a small card the child checks against when writing. Point out who and whole separately — there the w is silent and the sound is /h/.
